About Us
Situated in the historic town of Jefferson, Texas, Haywood House is a beloved landmark celebrated for its deep heritage and Southern charm. Haywood House captures the essence of tradition and local culture, offering a distinctive dining experience that draws both locals and visitors to enjoy the elegant ambiance and friendly atmosphere.
The Family
In 2019, Alan and Theresa Ponder purchased the historic building as the possible location for our retirement home, having spent our childhood exploring what was then an abandoned building. I told Alan I was interested in turning the Haywood House into a restaurant, and he agreed to join me in the venture.
While we were both familiar with running a successful business, neither of us knew the first thing about food. Luckily, our son Colt Johnson is a self-described foodie who has traveled and trained with chefs across Europe.
Together, Alan, Colt, and I have created a wonderful space for our community to enjoy exquisite Euro-American cuisine in sophisticated surroundings. But don’t call us “fancy”! We’re just hometown folks who love great food, craft cocktails, and an occasional Cuban cigar.
The History
Haywood House preserves the elegance and craftsmanship of the 1800s with hand-carved furnishing shipped directly from Europe. The historic building and decor bring the Golden Era of Jefferson, TX, back to life, recalling its days as a bustling river port.
Once a luxury hotel, the Haywood House was ravaged by fire in 1871, leaving only a quarter of the hotel standing. Since that time, what remained of the structure has functioned primarily as a private residence for some of Jefferson’s most notable families.
The Well Room
Had you visited Haywood House over a century ago, you would have seen the same building, complete with a functioning indoor water well. Today, the well is topped with a glass tabletop, creating an intimate setting for a romantic proposal or private birthday celebration with friends and family.
The Bar
Haywood House offers an unparalleled selection of craft beers and wines. With both beer and wine on tap, you’re sure to find a favorite among our carefully curated imported and domestic offerings. We also showcase popular picks from locally-owned Texas vineyards.
