The Haywood House was originally built as a hotel by Confederate General Hinch P. Mabry and his wife, Abbie Haywood Mabry, and quickly became the social hub of Jefferson. Construction began around 1865 and was completed by 1868, occupying an entire city block and mirroring the Marshall House in Savannah, Georgia.
In 1871, a fire devastated several buildings in Jefferson, including the Haywood House. Despite the damage, the Haywoods managed to save a quarter of the structure.
Although the Haywood House never returned to hotel use, the family and their descendants lived there until 1962, when Clarence C. Braden, a local philanthropist, passed away. Following his death, a large fortune in coins was discovered in the house, attracting international media attention.
Treasure hunters left the building in poor condition until Gary Hurst of Dallas acquired it in the late 1980s. Hurst restored the home and used it to house retail establishments and a dinner theater.
In the early 1990s, the Texas History Museum, organized by B.B. Barr and Johnny Roe of Dallas, took over the property, showcasing a collection of rare banking artifacts. After the collection was moved in 2003, the Haywood House was put up for sale again.
Paul and Carol Harrell purchased the home in 2005 as a private residence, then renovated the space for historical authenticity and began giving tours.
In 2019, Alan and Theresa Ponder acquired the property, and the Haywood House Restaurant and Cocktail Bar was established to welcome locals and tourists to become part of our historic community.
